Are you ebdiwee?

I had an interesting conversation with one of my relatives on MSN that day. Dunno how the subject surfaced, but I remember talking bout girls wearing 9irwaals being a turn off. Anyways, I belive that I accused him of being ebdiwee and appearently he said that he is "proud to be one", then I accused him of being an ebdiwee wannabe.

His arguments were as follow:
- arent your parents badow?
(me: in the past they were, now te7a'6iro)
- badow are respected people. Feehom il karam
(me: but we are not badow anymore, though we still hold our beduin traditions)

My arguments were as follow:
- the origin of the word ebdiwee comes from the word الباديه which sort of means the desert. We are born in the city so we are not badow.
- We have elictricity, Satelite TV, AC, Cars, etc etc. Are we badow?
-as a matter of fact, what type of ebdiwee are you that can chat on MSN and use the computer, an advanced one?

P.S: dont consider ureslf an ebdiwee if you drive a Nissan/Land Cruiser , have long hair, and talk with a broken arabic accent that is so far from bedouin.

as a matter of fact, have you guys seen the new 3ai'6a video clip? he has a fuckin pony tail !! what a disgrace..

Well, I see your point and it does make sense! I believe families here use this term to differentiate between different families!
Bedioun MEN use to have long hair btw, it is not a new trend that started now.
I'm not bedioun or have any bedouin blood in mean since my family are B7ar PEOPLE.

yes they did.. but the long hair was due to the fact they cant/didnt have time to cut their hair.

Look at our guys hairs these day. They take good care of it even more than girls. Tamlees and all this shit, common thats shamefull.

A9lan thats like al tashaboh bil nisa2. Our grand grand parents had long hair not to look good, not to be sexy.. but it was just due to the living enviroment. So dont compair them, our guys are turning gay, thanks to all those philipino stylists.

Let’s sum it up this way: u are Bedouin coz u come from a Bedouin family with Bedouin roots, but u shouldn't ride a camel or live in the desert, it's just that a9lek bedwy, and ur a modernized one.

Elshabab 7arrefaw the word bedwy and they came up with this new understanding; that any guy with a long hair, a guy who drives a Nissan patrol or a Land Cruiser, a guy who ADORES yooleh and all what he listens to is berrou’3ah and mee7ad, and uses a very BIG WORDy lochal language i.e. 6ESHOONEH, WERREFJEH..etc; is considered Bedouin. What bugs is that they act on it ignoring the fact that they’re not badow, nor 3arab.

I guess someone has to shoot 3ai'6ah, he's a disgrace to the society. At first, he was the reason why a shalleh became a song more than a shalleh coz la7anha, he was the reason why many shallat ppl switched to songs though they were gr8 at shallat, and he was the reason behind the long hair trend. He grosses me out, I hate him!

I did notice that quite a few young emirati men have long hair, though they still wear keffiyahs.

By the way what is 9irwaals?

ADinamorato said...

9irwaal = the long traditional underwear that looks like pants girls/ladies used to wear under the Jalabeeyah.

Jalabeeyah = the traditional dress ladies used to wear and still wear. (the one usually desigend with flowers and stuff)

but the 9irwaal thing has nothing to do with this topic, just couldnt resist including

This topic amuses me a great deal... As i recall a conversation my aunt had with her son (my cousin) a while back.. When he started going to the men's college he started prounouncing his words differently... instead of, what they seem to call, the civilised manner of speaking... he started pronouncing the words like a bedouin would... much to his mother's displeasure.. I found the whole thing remarkably funny...

I agree with you though... they're bedouin wannabes... if we're using the words as they chose to use them.. (not from the "roots" prespective..)

Lol maybe u should've told him you are an amercanized bedouin? hahah oh no wait that would mean u'd be wearing a cowboy hat and riding a horse =p

some sirwals are really nice, haha. im talking about the silk and satin ones, not the cotton ones.

wow that sounded soo random coming from an american.

You arent a bedu anymore, but its just an imense respect for your ancestors. Maybe thats why they are clinging to anything that resemebles the past lives of the bedu.

Fear me,,, Ana bedwi, Twayer 900 w bas.

On a serious note, I believe these trends are out there so locals could seem more in touch with the country. BUT I believe that what is needed is to move into modern society while retaining bedwin values (the ISLAMIC ones)... Sort of like sultan :-)

Indeed, the term Bedoiun seems to have different meanings for different people. Albeit, the past meaning being much more insightful of the true and meaningful things in life. Now everything seems to be an act somehow.
